Baird referred to herself and her husband, Patrick O’Connell, as “working-class actors” who “scraped by with a modest income.”

Some people believe Billie Eilish is a “nepo baby,” but her mother, Maggie Baird, disagrees.
In a recent interview with Glamour for this year’s Women of the Year edition, which highlighted four moms of celebrities, Baird addressed the idea that her Grammy-winning daughter gained advantages due to nepotism, citing her own long acting career in Los Angeles.
This discussion came up after a 1999 episode of Friends, in which Baird appeared as a casting director alongside Matt LeBlanc’s character Joey Tribbiani, went viral online. In the episode, Joey auditions to maintain his health insurance.
“I find it amusing. After that episode aired, people started saying, ‘Oh, Billie is a nepo baby,'” she shared with the publication. “And I thought, ‘Did you know I got that role on Friends because I was about to lose my health insurance?'”
Baird, who is also the mother of musician Finneas O’Connell, described herself and her husband, Patrick O’Connell, as “working-class actors.”
“We scraped by with a modest income, which allowed us to spend a lot of time with our children, and that was wonderful,” she reflected. “However, the industry is mostly made up of people like us, or even those who aren’t in a similar situation and struggle even more. So when our kids experienced success, it was a completely new experience for us.”
Although Baird’s film and television career spanned from the 1980s to the 2010s, during which she appeared in shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, The X-Files, The West Wing, and Charmed, most of her roles were not in leading positions.
“I believe people often overlook the existence of an entire industry filled with creative individuals who are working hard, facing challenges, and building fulfilling lives,” she explained to Glamour. “However, that experience is vastly different from the one on this side of the door, where you suddenly find yourself in a completely different environment.”
In another part of the interview, Baird reflected on the creation of her 2013 independent film, Life Inside Out, in which she co-starred with Finneas, and shared why it held particular significance for her.
“In 2012, I made the decision to create a movie. I wrote the screenplay with a friend and launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund it. I wanted to demonstrate to my kids that you can make things happen,” she explained. “You don’t have to wait for someone to give you permission. You can take action and make it a reality.”
Baird went on to say, “That probably didn’t have any bearing on their success since that was all their achievement. But I think it’s crucial. As you encourage your children to achieve more than you did, it’s also vital to maintain your own life. You can still be active and creative. Both aspects are equally important.”
