Don’t look for Doja Cat to release a country album anytime soon.

In her Sept. 21 interview on CBS Sunday Morning, the “Paint the Town Red” star reflected on how today’s musicians often branch out from their usual genres.

When host Michelle Miller asked the 29-year-old, “What is it about your generation?” Doja pointed to a cultural shift that started more than three decades ago and still shapes music today.

“Coming out of the ’90s, there was this sense of optimism for the future, and artists were experimenting with everything, often leaning into irony,” she explained.

“It’s only become more ironic over time — like rappers choosing to wear skirts and dresses as a way of connecting with their feminine side,” Doja Cat explained.

The performer, born Amala Dlamini, added that this sense of irony has propelled her own generation — and likely future ones — into breaking away from traditional expectations.

“It’s not just about androgyny, though that was a hallmark of the ’80s, especially with artists like Prince,” she continued. “It’s about embracing the parts of yourself that feel genuine, without apology. That freedom has encouraged people to experiment, and it’s influenced me too. I feel like there aren’t any limits.”

When host Michelle Miller, 57, listed genres such as rap, pop, jazz, and R&B, she asked which one Doja’s music doesn’t represent. The Grammy-winning artist laughed before replying, “Country. I see myself as a rapper who makes pop music.”

Doja also spoke about her forthcoming album, Vie, which she previously described as “pop-driven” in a July interview with V Magazine. “It wasn’t until working on Vie that I really began to appreciate my earlier music,” she admitted.

Reflecting on her 2023 release Scarlet, she explained, “That album was more of an energetic purge, very different from what I’m doing now. At this point, I want to focus on what I know.”

She’s also shared the symbolism behind Vie’s cover art, which shows her suspended in a parachute tangled in a tree.

“Falling in love means putting trust in yourself and others,” she wrote on Instagram on Sept. 22. “The yellow parachute represents curiosity, joy, and adventure — guiding you toward new experiences and encouraging leaps of faith without limits.

The tree symbolizes life and wisdom. It offers safety within its branches, but also reminds you that the pain of falling can heal. You don’t have to crash to the ground. Love grows upward, but its strength lies in the roots that keep you grounded. This is the cover of my album. 🌳”
