The pop sensation took the stage before a packed audience in New York City on Monday, Aug. 11.

Katy Perry had plenty to celebrate during her latest trip to New York City.
On Monday, Aug. 11, the pop superstar headlined her sold-out Lifetimes concert at Madison Square Garden, a 19,500-seat venue that some doubted she could fill.
Greeting the cheering crowd, Perry recalled the skepticism she faced. “They said, ‘No way! You can’t sell out MSG.’ And honestly, I was nervous too,” she admitted — before joking that her real fear was eating a “corner hot dog,” not pulling off the show.
“New York, you’re special, and you know it,” the 40-year-old told the audience. “But you’re also a beautiful hot mess.”
She went on to share her first impressions upon arriving in the city. “We rolled in from Philly late at night, and instantly, it smelled like New York. You know the smell. There were drunk people throwing up on the same corner where others were making out. That’s New York City — and I loved it.”
Perry explained that this experience helped her truly grasp the city’s essence. “New York represents life — the highs, the lows, the chaos, the beauty. It’s not perfect, and that’s the point, because perfection is an illusion,” she said. “I get it now because authenticity is my favorite thing, and New York is nothing if not authentic.”
Her heartfelt speech came after months of enduring criticism online.
Back in April, Perry faced backlash when she joined Gayle King, Lauren Sánchez, Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn on an all-women Blue Origin spaceflight.
Later, she opened up in a candid Instagram comment, assuring fans that she refuses to let negativity consume her. “When the online world tries to turn me into a piñata, I try to respond with grace and send love, because I know so many people are hurting, and the internet is often a dumping ground for the unhealed,” she wrote on April 29, under a post about a fan tribute to her in Times Square.
Acknowledging that her life often plays out in front of “a huge audience,” Perry added, “Sometimes I fall, but I always get back up. I keep playing the game, and even with all the bumps and bruises, I keep moving toward the light — and every time, that light unlocks a new level.” ❤️
