The “Flowers” artist also explained why getting engaged happened at just the right moment in her life.

Miley Cyrus is adjusting to a new chapter in her personal life with Maxx Morando.
At the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards on Saturday, Jan. 3, the 33-year-old singer spoke with Entertainment Tonight and admitted she still feels awkward calling Morando, 27, her fiancé. She laughed that she tends to be especially nerdy when it comes to labels like that.
The “Flowers” artist also explained why their engagement feels perfectly timed, linking it to her involvement in Avatar: Fire and Ash, a film that features her song “Dream as One” on its soundtrack. Cyrus said the movie’s focus on relationships — a core theme emphasized by director James Cameron — resonated deeply with where she is emotionally right now.
She shared that being genuinely happy and in love allowed her to naturally connect with the message of the film. According to Cyrus, the relationship entered her life at just the right moment, when she felt grounded and ready to support the story the movie aims to tell.
Cyrus also briefly touched on her family life, mentioning her sister Brandi Cyrus’ recent engagement to Matt Southcombe, which Brandi announced on Instagram on Dec. 26. She described her family as humble and down-to-earth, noting that despite being performers, they prefer authenticity and simplicity when they’re together at home.
On Dec. 2, PEOPLE confirmed that Cyrus and Morando — the drummer for the band Liily — had gotten engaged after four years of dating. Speculation began when Cyrus appeared at the Avatar: Fire and Ash world premiere in Los Angeles on Dec. 1 wearing a diamond ring.
While promoting the film, Cyrus told PEOPLE that what surprised her most about the engagement was how much privacy the couple has managed to maintain. She explained that being older has made her more intentional about what she chooses to share publicly.
A few days later, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Dec. 4, Cyrus joked that she “really did get engaged” partly because of her unusual fear of paper.
