Olivia Rodrigo recently reflected on a moment that felt straight out of a story she once imagined as a fan. While appearing on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame podcast Music Makes Us on Tuesday, Dec. 16, the “Vampire” artist talked about how surreal it felt to spend time with Harry Styles.

The 22-year-old shared that she used to write One Direction fan fiction when she was still in elementary school. Years later, she found herself meeting Styles in real life, enjoying tea together and taking a walk. Looking back on the experience, Rodrigo said it was hard to believe, joking that it felt like something she had once written for fun had somehow become reality, and marveling at how unexpectedly life can unfold.

If you want it shorter, more news-style, or more casual, I can revise it again.

Rodrigo also had nothing but kind things to say about Styles, describing him as incredibly kind. She joked that if her 10-year-old self had been told she would one day be spending time with him, she would have never believed it. The singer previously mentioned her love for fan fiction about Styles in a Vogue cover story published in August 2023.

During another part of the podcast conversation, the “Traitor” artist spoke about the album she turns to whenever she needs creative motivation. She shared that Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill helps ground her when she feels unsure of herself or struggles to find the right words. According to Rodrigo, the record captures a wide range of human emotions, making it especially powerful and relatable.

What stands out to her most is how the album blends raw feelings like frustration and envy with moments of optimism and happiness. She said the project reminds her of the emotional honesty she strives for in her own work. Rodrigo also praised Morissette’s fearless authenticity, noting that it’s inspiring as a songwriter to hear music created out of a genuine need to express something, rather than simply aiming for popularity.

Last November, Rodrigo honored the White Stripes by performing “We’re Going to Be Friends” during a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation event.
