Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words premieres on Prime Video on Thursday, Oct. 31.
Megan Thee Stallion doesn’t hold back when it comes to honoring her parents and fans.
At the premiere of her Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words documentary on Wednesday, Oct. 30, the 29-year-old “Mamushi” artist took a heartfelt moment to recognize her loyal “Hotties” and pay tribute to her parents, Holly Thomas and Joseph Pete, Jr.
“There are so many people here,” she remarked emotionally as she took the stage. “It’s incredible to see this many Hotties right now… I can’t believe I started crying.”
Megan continued, “I’m so grateful to each and every one of you for being here to celebrate my documentary premiere. Your support means everything to me, and this journey has been years in the making.”
She then gave a heartfelt “big shout-out” to her late parents, acknowledging that while her “mama” always advised her to “keep my business to myself,” she felt this was the “perfect opportunity” to open up.
“I wouldn’t be who I am today without Holly Thomas,” she said in tribute to her mother, who passed away from cancer in 2019. “Mommy, I love you.”
Megan also shared insights into her collaboration with director and producer Nneka Onuorah for the documentary. Initially, she admitted to having reservations about the project, but eventually embraced it, and the two “did that,” forming a close friendship along the way.
“Having someone with you all day, every day, capturing your most personal moments, even when you’d rather they didn’t, has been a wild experience,” Megan shared. She explained that Onuorah would sometimes even film on her phone when Megan would say, “cut the cameras.”
She expressed her gratitude to Onuorah for staying true to her story, adding that the documentary offers an authentic look at who she is both as a person and an artist.
“I started noticing how people were dehumanizing me and trying to control my narrative, which is exactly why I decided to make this documentary,” Megan explained. “I thought, ‘You know what? I’m just going to tell my truth and lay it all out because nothing else gets respected except raw honesty.’”
She added, “I tried being the perfect, cookie-cutter celebrity for everyone. Sorry that didn’t work out.”
According to the film’s synopsis, the documentary “follows the Houston native’s rise to stardom, revealing her resilience as she navigates fame, loss, pressure, and success.” The documentary promises to capture Megan’s most vulnerable moments, offering fans an intimate glimpse into the real Megan Pete.
Reflecting on the struggles shown in the film, Megan previously told PEOPLE, “I was in such a dark place that even being asked how I was doing would make me burst into tears. I faced a lot with my mental health, and I hope viewers see that if their favorite artist went through this and came out stronger, they can, too.”
