Benson Boone’s latest music video pits him against his fiercest opponents: online trolls, harsh critics, and even swimming pool rules banning backflips off diving boards.
Released on Friday, June 20, Boone’s second studio album American Heart arrived alongside a playful and satirical video for the standout single “Mr. Electric Blue.” The video blends humor, light self-mockery, and even features a shirtless car wash scene — all while taking subtle jabs at his doubters.
Directed by Matt Eastin, the video kicks off with Boone being told during a meeting at “Industry Plant Records” that he owes $10 million — a tongue-in-cheek nod to rumors about his authenticity in the music industry. What follows is a comedic scramble to raise the money in just seven days, sending him into a series of odd jobs like dog-walking, lawn-mowing, car-washing, and selling jumpsuits.
The video kicks off with Boone strolling into a meeting wearing a shirt labeled “one hit wonder,” only to be told by a record executive that things aren’t looking great — his signature backflips and his “moonbeam ice cream” catchphrase (a playful reference to his song “Mystical Magical”) just aren’t cutting it.
“We need something fresh — maybe even actual songwriting?” the exec jokes.
“I don’t know how to do that,” Boone quips back, leaning into the humor with some self-deprecation.
With his fictional career hanging in the balance, Boone embarks on a wild mission to earn $10 million in just one week. Along the way, he picks up odd jobs like being a pool cleaner — though he’s quickly shut down by a “no backflips” sign, forcing him to abandon the diving board.
By the video’s finale, it’s revealed that Boone is actually doing just fine. His music has been picked up by retailers, restaurants, and movie theaters, effectively turning him into “the most overplayed artist in the world.”
“That’s all I’ve ever wanted,” he declares with a grin.
The release of American Heart, Boone’s second full-length album, has helped silence doubts about him being a one-hit wonder. The record features the popular single “Mystical Magical,” following the massive success of “Beautiful Things,” which topped charts last year.
In a March interview with Rolling Stone, Boone shared that he hopes listeners now see him as more than just a single breakout track. “I think I’m getting to the point where people realize there’s more to me than that one song,” he said. “But I still love it. I’m proud of it. I’ll keep performing it, and I hope the love for it sticks around.”
The new 10-track album also sets the stage for Boone’s upcoming American Heart arena tour, which will begin in August in St. Paul, Minnesota, with major stops including Madison Square Garden in New York City and the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
