Billie Eilish Reveals the Hair Color That Meant the Most to Her: ‘It Felt Like I Was Finally Becoming Myself’

The singer behind “What Was I Made For?” shared that her green and black hair was the style that truly defined her career.
Throughout her career, Billie Eilish has experimented with a wide range of hair colors and styles—but only one truly made her feel like she was coming into her own.
In a conversation for British Vogue published on Monday, April 14, the 23-year-old “What Was I Made For?” artist opened up to various celebrities about her journey in music, fashion, and personal growth. When actor Colman Domingo asked which hair colors stood out most to her, Eilish reflected on two distinct eras.
“I tend to look back fondly on the phases when I had green roots and red roots,” she shared. “The green and black combo, especially, felt incredibly personal and really captured who I was at that point in my life. It defined that stage of my career.”
“I hadn’t really seen that kind of style before, and it felt amazing to have something that felt uniquely mine,” she said. “That particular shade of green became my color for a long time—I was obsessed. It touched everything: my hair, nails, outfits. That time in my life felt almost magical, and so intense. I truly felt like I was stepping into my identity.”
When Nicki Minaj followed up, Eilish playfully suggested naming the signature green and black look “The Billie.”
Later in the conversation, the Academy Award winner reflected on past fashion choices that now make her cringe, prompted by a question from British Vogue’s head of editorial content, Chioma Nnadi.
“I’ve gotta give myself props for always going all out,” Eilish said with a laugh. “One time I literally had bouncy balls strapped to the bottoms of my shoes… But hey, I was fully committed, and I don’t regret a thing.”
Eilish has previously been open about her struggles with self-image, and her hair has often played a big part in that journey.
While the Happier Than Ever singer inspired a wave of hair trends in March 2021 with the reveal of her platinum blonde look, she told Rolling Stone in an interview last year that the drastic change—especially when she debuted it at the 2021 Met Gala—triggered a bit of an identity crisis.
“When I went blonde, I instantly thought, ‘I don’t even recognize myself,’” she admitted in the interview.
While the elegant look matched the softer, jazz-inspired tone of her second album Happier Than Ever, Eilish eventually realized it felt too far removed from her authentic identity.
Her brother and creative partner, Finneas O’Connell, reflected on the album’s vibe, saying, “It was almost like hiding out in a storm shelter while reading a charming little book. The whole thing felt like a way of coping.”
Even after she moved on from the blonde and switched to a deep, chocolatey brown—more in line with her usual dark tones—Eilish still felt somewhat disconnected from her true self.
