Texas native and singer-songwriter Bella Kay speaks with PEOPLE about her rapid rise to viral fame and the journey of pursuing her musical ambitions.
Just a year ago, Bella Kay believed the defining moment of her career was the viral popularity of her emotional breakup song, “The Sick.” Looking back, however, she admits she was uncertain whether the song’s success would last.
Speaking with PEOPLE, the 20-year-old indie-pop artist recalled feeling anxious after the track gained attention. She wondered whether audiences would continue to care about her music or if the hit would be a one-time achievement. While creating one successful song is difficult, she questioned whether she could continue producing music that resonated with listeners.
Fortunately, her momentum only grew. Kay now considers the real turning point in her career to be the success of “iloveitiloveitiloveit,” an indie-pop anthem driven by guitar melodies and centered on themes of self-sabotage. The single climbed to No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking her first appearance on the chart. As fans discovered the track, many also revisited “The Sick,” helping build her audience and eventually leading to a recording contract with Atlantic Records in July 2025.
For the Texas-born singer-songwriter, the experience was deeply rewarding. Those milestones paved the way for the release of her debut album, My Reckless Abandon, a deeply personal collection of songs. Kay, who describes herself as someone who naturally notices patterns, says the album explores cycles of self-destructive behavior while reflecting on the emotional growth that comes from recognizing them.
During her conversation with PEOPLE, Kay discussed the inspiration behind the album, how songwriting became an emotional outlet while growing up as a biracial girl in Texas, and what it was like to discover that superstar SZA had become one of her supporters.
Reflecting on how her musical journey began, Kay said she had always been drawn to both music and creative writing. Around the age of 13 or 14, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she became fascinated with songwriting after hearing artists whose lyrics deeply moved her. Inspired by their ability to express powerful emotions through music, she decided to learn guitar and began writing simple songs of her own—a hobby that quickly turned into a lasting passion.
Before discovering songwriting, Kay enjoyed inventing stories, creating fictional characters, and singing. Once she realized she could combine all of those interests into writing songs, she felt she had found the perfect creative outlet. Although she had a habit of abandoning hobbies as a child, songwriting was different. When she asked her father for a guitar, he questioned whether she would eventually lose interest like she had with other activities. Despite his doubts, he bought her one, and Kay proved him wrong by dedicating herself to practicing and writing regularly.
She explained that songwriting became her way of processing emotions. Whenever she experienced sadness, struggled at school, or argued with her brothers, she would retreat to her room and write. Rather than keeping a traditional diary, she poured her thoughts into lyrics, allowing herself to express her feelings without fear of judgment. That openness, she believes, is why listeners often describe her songs as feeling as intimate and honest as personal journal entries.
