Harry Styles recently shared a rare look into how he adjusted from being in a band to building a solo career. In a conversation with his friend and stylist Harry Lambert published by The Sunday Times Magazine on Feb. 14, he spoke about the emotional impact of One Direction’s 2015 breakup.
Styles explained that being in a group once gave him space to blend in, since responsibilities were shared with bandmates Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, and Liam Payne. Performing alone for the first time felt strange and intimidating, and he admitted he suddenly experienced a strong sense of isolation despite having support and public interest in his music. He also put heavy pressure on himself to succeed on his own.
Looking back at his 2017 debut solo album, Styles said he wanted to explore his personal sound while also feeling anxious about meeting fans’ expectations and not disappointing those who believed in him.
He also talked about stepping away from the spotlight after finishing his lengthy Love on Tour in July 2023 — his first major break in more than ten years. Although taking time off initially felt overwhelming, he realized it was necessary as he approached his 30th birthday and wanted to focus on other aspects of life.
During that period, he spent time in Italy, which became especially meaningful to him. Living in Rome taught him how to slow down, enjoy simple moments, and appreciate experiences like sharing meals and being present rather than constantly rushing.
Styles described the time away from music as deeply transformative. It helped him understand himself better and confirmed that he could feel fulfilled outside of his career, which ultimately influenced the creative freedom behind his new work.
Now preparing to return to performing, Styles has announced his fourth album, All the Time. Disco, Occasionally., set for release on March 6, along with plans for a global residency tour across multiple major cities in 2026. He explained that the album title reflects a life philosophy — that you can’t stay in “disco mode” all the time and need balance.
