The 2013 hit explores the complex ways both artists have experienced and navigated fame.

Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z reunited onstage in Paris for a special throwback performance.

Timberlake made a surprise appearance during the JAŸ-Z 30 Tour at Stade de France on Thursday, Sept. 10. The pair took the stage together to perform “Holy Grail,” their 2013 collaboration from Jay-Z’s album Magna Carta Holy Grail. The song’s live rendition marked a rare opportunity for fans to see the two performers revisit their hit together.

Following the concert, the 45-year-old Timberlake posted several photos from the evening on Instagram. The carousel included images of him and the 56-year-old rapper posing beneath the stadium lights, as well as a shot showing the enthusiastic crowd reacting to the performance.

“PARIS 🇫🇷 @JAYZ,” Timberlake wrote in the caption.

Among those cheering them on was producer Timbaland, who helped produce “Holy Grail.” He joined the excitement in the comments, writing, “Let’s gooooo.”

Jay-Z’s entertainment and management company, Roc Nation, also highlighted the reunion by sharing video footage from the concert. The dramatic slow-motion clip showed Timberlake and Jay-Z making their entrance onto the stage, accompanied by Timberlake’s portion of “Holy Grail.”

First released in 2013, “Holy Grail” examines the complicated connection both musicians have with celebrity culture. While fame can bring admiration and success, the song also considers the personal consequences and pressures that can come with being constantly in the public eye.

Jay-Z previously explained the importance of the track during a July 2013 interview with the BBC, describing “Holy Grail” as the centerpiece of Magna Carta Holy Grail. The song also stands out for its references to well-known celebrities and artists whom Jay-Z admired, while acknowledging how fame and public attention had negatively affected some of their lives.
