The singer channels Madonna’s unforgettable style, donning the pop icon’s signature lace-and-lingerie ensemble while humorously recreating the story behind her historic debut performance at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Meghan Trainor is stepping into Madonna’s shoes — complete with the legendary “Boy Toy” belt — for the revival of Comedy Central’s Drunk History.
The Emmy-winning series returned Tuesday, Sept. 15, with three new short-form installments released through Comedy Central’s YouTube channel. One of the episodes looks back at the very first MTV Video Music Awards, with storyteller Marisha Ray recounting Madonna’s unforgettable debut performance after enjoying five margaritas and three tequila shots.
The premiere revisits Madonna’s appearance at the inaugural VMAs in 1984, with Trainor, 32, portraying the pop superstar who would eventually become known worldwide as the Queen of Pop.
“Madonna gets there. She’s the new girl. She’s hot s—. I mean, she’s a f—ing icon. I spilled margarita on myself,” Ray says during her tipsy retelling.
Madonna was still establishing herself as a pop sensation when she took the stage at the first MTV VMAs in 1984. Her performance of “Like a Virgin” quickly became one of the ceremony’s most memorable moments. Wearing a wedding dress and her instantly recognizable “Boy Toy” belt, she moved across the stage, lost one of her shoes and turned an otherwise straightforward performance into a piece of MTV history.
Over 40 years later, Trainor recreates that famous sequence for Drunk History. The episode goes beyond simply recreating Madonna’s performance, also dramatizing the events and preparations that led to the singer’s headline-making appearance.
The new installment arrives shortly after the anniversary of Madonna’s 1984 VMA performance, an appearance widely remembered as a defining early moment in MTV’s history.
Created by Derek Waters and Jeremy Konner, Drunk History built its reputation around intoxicated storytellers recounting historical events while actors and celebrities bring those stories to life through comedic reenactments. The latest installments represent the franchise’s return to original episodes after several years, reviving its combination of unconventional narration, celebrity cameos and history-inspired comedy.
Madonna’s VMA story is the first of three new episodes. The remaining installments focus on Frances Perkins, who played a significant role in the development of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, and two men whose rivalry centered on their attempts to create the world’s largest ball of twine.
The returning series features Steve Agee, Tim Baltz, Seth Green, Colin Hanks, Jack McBrayer, Chris Parnell, Johnny Pemberton, Daryl Sabara, Mae Whitman, Weird Al Yankovic and other performers. Narration comes from Lisa Gilroy, Patton Oswalt and Ray.
“We are thrilled that Drunk History is back,” Comedy Central EVP and Head of Original Content Ari Pearce said. He added that the new episodes highlight the network’s comedy legacy while providing another platform for emerging comedic performers and allowing the franchise to reach audiences in new ways.
