Miley Cyrus Reveals She Searched Fiancé Maxx Morando for a Ring in Kyoto Before His Surprise Proposal

Miley Cyrus is scheduled to debut her upcoming album, Bass Persuades, on September 18.
Miley Cyrus came surprisingly close to discovering that her longtime partner, Maxx Morando, was carrying an engagement ring before he proposed.
The 33-year-old singer recently discussed her engagement to Morando, 27, during a conversation with Zane Lowe for Apple Music on Thursday, Sept. 17. Cyrus explained that she had a strong feeling the drummer might propose while the couple was traveling through Japan last year.
During one of their walks in Kyoto, Cyrus decided to investigate her suspicions herself.
“Me and Maxx were actually going on a walk… and because I won’t allow anything to happen organically for this man, I was like, ‘Oh, I’m gonna pat him down. I bet he has an engagement ring. This would be the best time,’” she recalled. “I didn’t find it!”
After finding nothing, Cyrus admitted that she became frustrated. She said she had to give herself a pep talk so she wouldn’t let her disappointment ruin their vacation.
“I go into the bathroom. I’m like, ‘Don’t do this right now. Don’t take a beautiful time and throw a tantrum. It’s not very becoming of you and you’re a brat,’” she explained to Lowe.
Cyrus said she realized that Morando apparently didn’t have the ring and reminded herself not to spoil the trip by becoming upset. Still, she acknowledged that she was extremely tempted to have a tantrum.
As it turned out, Morando actually was carrying the ring. However, it was tucked inside a pocket close to his knee — a spot Cyrus hadn’t checked during her impromptu search.
The Grammy-winning artist said she was ultimately relieved that she hadn’t discovered the ring. Morando later told her that finding it beforehand would have taken away from the significance of the proposal.
During their walk, Cyrus became distracted by the scenery around them, particularly the landscaping and the paving stones along the path. Because she was so focused on her surroundings, she didn’t immediately realize that Morando was preparing to propose.
“I turned around ‘cause I gasped and he was on one knee. He totally got away with it,” Cyrus recalled.
According to Cyrus, Morando then expressed his feelings and asked her to marry him. She jokingly admitted that she had nearly ruined the surprise herself.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, I almost botched it.’ He was like, ‘So bad. You really almost truly ruined it,’” she said.
Cyrus also revealed that marriage had been a topic of conversation between the couple for quite some time. She even said she had occasionally sent Morando links as subtle hints about what she wanted.
“This part of my life is something I’ve always wanted, and this is what I hope other people get to have, what I have,” Cyrus said. “I don’t know if everybody gets to find their Maxx.”
Cyrus and Morando have been romantically involved for six years and became engaged last year.
Morando previously shared his perspective on the proposal with Wonderland magazine in July. He explained that keeping the plan hidden from Cyrus was challenging and that he was nervous when the moment finally arrived.
“I was sweating,” he said. “I could feel my heart pounding.”
Morando recalled growing up watching movie proposals in which men traditionally get down on one knee, but said the reality of doing it himself made him realize how much could go wrong.
“I didn’t want to f— up and fumble or drop the [ring],” he said.
Meanwhile, Cyrus is preparing to release her latest album, Bass Persuades, on Friday, Sept. 18. The project will be credited simply to her first name, Miley. During her conversation with Lowe, she described the sound she was aiming for as “like Pink Floyd but gay.”
