She also mentioned that she enjoys Carpenter’s music and has spoken with her on multiple occasions, emphasizing that there’s only mutual support between them.
Back in 2021, Rodrigo’s breakout hit “Drivers License” was widely believed to be inspired by her relationship with her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star Joshua Bassett. When Bassett was later seen with Carpenter, fans speculated that Carpenter might have been the “blonde girl” referenced in the song’s lyrics.
Not long after, Carpenter released “Skin,” which many listeners interpreted as a reply to Rodrigo’s track. Certain lines in the song appeared to address the rumors, fueling even more discussion among fans.

This project follows her second album, Guts, which achieved major success after its release in 2023. She shared that writing from a place of happiness has been a new creative challenge, as she’s more accustomed to expressing complex or emotional experiences in her music.
Meanwhile, Carpenter continues to build her own path in pop music. She reached a new level of success with her sixth album Short n’ Sweet in 2024 and later followed it up with Man’s Best Friend, further solidifying her place in the industry.
