Selena Gomez Confirms Taylor Swift’s Track “Dorothea” Was Written About Her

Selena Gomez has confirmed that one of Taylor Swift’s songs was written about her.
While appearing on the May 3 episode of Friends Keep Secrets, Benny Blanco’s podcast co-hosted with Lil Dicky and Kristin Batalucco, the Rare Beauty founder opened up about her long-standing bond with the global pop star. During the conversation, Gomez shared that a track from Swift’s 2020 album Evermore was inspired by their friendship.
“‘Dorothea’ is about me,” Gomez, 33, revealed. She reflected on the many meaningful experiences they shared growing up together, describing those years as formative. From relationships and family struggles to love and heartbreak, she said they were navigating life side by side — she at 15 and Swift at 18 — without fully understanding the whirlwind around them.
Gomez explained that their perspective on one another has never changed despite fame and time. Listening to “Dorothea” now, she said she admires how beautifully Swift captured those emotions in the lyrics.
In the song, Swift appears to reference a grounded, enduring friendship, singing about always having a place to return and remembering someone before fame defined them.
Gomez also disclosed that Swift once wrote another song about their relationship titled “Family,” though it was never officially released. According to Gomez, the track was written more than a decade ago. She recalled that the lyrics touched on their early dreams — her desire to act in films and Swift’s ambitions of performing in stadiums — highlighting how they supported each other’s aspirations even when those dreams seemed far-fetched.
Thinking about it now makes Gomez emotional. She noted that both of those once-distant dreams have since become reality, which gives the song even deeper meaning today.
She described “Family” as incredibly touching, remembering how Swift told her at the time that she had written it specifically about them and their story.
Looking back on their journey through fame, Gomez said she and Swift handled the pressures of the spotlight as best they could. When they reflect on their careers, she explained, the focus isn’t on success or achievements but on the rare connection they share — one built over 17 years of friendship, heartbreaks, romances and unforgettable life experiences.
