Zayn Malik is taking a chance on Las Vegas—and it’s paying off.
On Tuesday night, the 33-year-old artist launched his Las Vegas residency with the first of seven scheduled performances at Dolby Live at Park MGM. The former One Direction member pulled from across his discography, blending recent material, older fan favorites, and several songs that have yet to be officially released.
Early in the show, the “Pillowtalk” singer hinted at what’s next in his career, revealing that he’s been spending time in the studio and has a new album on the way. He also promised fans they’d hear brand-new material during the night, prompting enthusiastic “woofs” from the crowd—a familiar concert tradition among his fans.
Dressed in a blue military-style jacket accented with gold epaulettes, Malik opened the set with “She” from his debut album Mind of Mine. After the energetic start, the performance shifted into a more intimate and reflective tone. He introduced what he described as the emotional section of the show, delivering heartfelt renditions of songs like “Scripted” and “Lied To,” accompanied by lyrics displayed on massive screens surrounding the stage.
At one point, Malik told the audience he wanted to bring the energy down and lean fully into the emotions. That mood continued during a sensual performance of “It’s You,” when a lone spotlight focused on him while soft, green visuals—reminiscent of the Northern Lights—glowed behind him. Fans responded by illuminating the venue with their phone flashlights, creating a spontaneous and memorable atmosphere.
Reflecting on the moment, Malik admitted that headlining a Las Vegas residency still feels surreal to him, saying it hasn’t fully sunk in yet.
Unlike many residency productions, the show relied on minimal visual effects. The understated approach kept attention squarely on Malik and his eight-member, all-female backing band.
As the 80-minute set progressed, Malik followed through on his promise of new material, debuting four unreleased tracks: “Used to the Blues,” “Die For Me,” “Fatal,” and “Take Turns.” He also surprised fans by performing “Drunk” from Mind of Mine live for the first time. Joking with the crowd, he noted that while he’d never performed the song before, it wasn’t exactly unfamiliar.
The opening night took place as Malik continues to recover from a recent illness. He shared that he’d been battling a sinus infection for the past two weeks and was frequently seen sipping tea between songs. Near the end of the show, he thanked the audience for their patience, explaining that his voice wasn’t at full strength.
Although speculation about a potential Harry Styles residency has circulated for years, Malik is the first former One Direction member to secure a Las Vegas run. The residency comes less than two years after the release of his fourth studio album, Room Under the Stairs, and follows his first solo tour, which experienced schedule changes after the death of former bandmate Liam Payne in October 2024.
