Chappell Roan is shedding light on her experience being cast as a “villain” in the pop world.
During a new episode of Outlaws with TS Madison, released on Tuesday, May 20, the “Pink Pony Club” singer revealed that she’s gone through several “villain” phases over the past nine months.
“I think I’ve probably had three ‘villain eras’ in less than a year,” said Roan, 27. “It’s likely because I’m new to the pop scene and I refuse to accept the way things have traditionally been done — especially by those who’ve been in the game since they were kids and were taught that this kind of treatment is normal.”
Roan went on to say that, because she only rose to fame at 26, she had the benefit of working regular jobs and learning what respectful treatment in a workplace should look like.
“I was treated with more kindness at my donut shop gig than I’ve ever received on a red carpet,” she said. “Even customers were nicer to me than people in the media.”
The “Good Luck, Babe!” artist emphasized that setting boundaries doesn’t make her “ungrateful” or a “villain.” She questioned the culture of rudeness in public appearances, asking, “Why is this the standard?”
Roan also reflected on how celebrities like Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Lindsay Lohan have been mistreated by the public and media, noting that despite some overdue apologies, they still face similar behavior today.
She then addressed her reasons for being firm about personal boundaries.
“Do people want me to end up afraid to leave the house? Or so overwhelmed that I can’t perform?” she said. “Because that’s where I’ll end up if I stay silent. If I don’t advocate for myself, I’ll walk away from all of this — I just can’t handle it.”
Roan shared that she finds it unbearable when people touch her without consent, follow her, or try to define who she is.
One notable moment that drew attention was her confrontation at the 2024 MTV VMAs in September. In a clip from the red carpet pre-show, which circulated on X (formerly Twitter), Roan was seen reacting to someone telling her to “shut the f— up.” Variety later reported that the person was a photographer.
“You shut the f— up,” Roan shot back, pointing directly at the individual. After stepping aside for a wardrobe adjustment, she added, “Don’t. Not me, bitch!”
The response drew cheers from nearby attendees, with one person audibly supporting her: “You tell ’em, girl.”
