Charlotte Lawrence is embracing a new chapter in her career.
The 24-year-old singer and actress dropped her latest single, the introspective, rock-infused track “Dog,” on Feb. 28, offering another glimpse into her long-awaited debut album, slated for release later this year.
A full-length album has been a long time in the making for Lawrence, who has released numerous singles and two EPs since making her debut in 2017 at just 16 years old. Creativity has always been a part of her life—she’s the daughter of actress Christa Miller and TV writer/producer Bill Lawrence, who introduced her to the entertainment world at a young age.
Over the years, Charlotte has built an impressive résumé, collaborating with industry heavyweights. She has toured with artists like Lauv and Madison Beer, acted alongside Vince Vaughn in Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey, and even shared the stage with Paul McCartney, who joined her and her boyfriend, producer Andrew Watt, for a performance last year.
In a recent Zoom interview with PEOPLE, Lawrence opened up about the inspiration behind “Dog,” her experience touring with Beer, what it’s like dating a Grammy-winning producer, and what fans can expect from her upcoming album.
I think almost everyone has experienced a situation where they care about someone more than they’re cared for in return. I’ve been in that position plenty of times—falling for someone and believing it’s real, only to realize it wasn’t at all. In the end, I was just another girl, and he didn’t care. That’s just how it goes.
I wrote this song reflecting on that feeling—when you’re so captivated by someone that you see everything through rose-colored glasses, ignoring the truth. Sometimes it’s not even about red flags; it’s just the reality that this person doesn’t feel the same way and has no interest in being with you.
It’s easy to fall into the cycle of waiting and hoping for something to change, even when, deep down, you know it never will. That’s where the inspiration for Dog came from. I thought about my own dogs—how, when I leave in the morning, instead of playing or exploring, they just sit by the window and wait for me to come back. That’s exactly how I felt in this… I wouldn’t even call it a relationship, more like a situationship.
This song is about desperation, confusion, love, and heartbreak—all emotions that, at some point, everyone has to experience.
We really wanted to capture the sense of confusion and the feeling of losing yourself. When you’re deeply into someone—especially when they don’t reciprocate your feelings from the start—you become more vulnerable to changing yourself just to fit what you think they’d want. When you’re young, this can be even more intense. You start molding yourself into what you believe is the “perfect” version for them.
In the video, I keep layering on different clothes, but nothing works. I’m putting a bra over a dress, piling on outfits, trying so hard to look cool, but instead, it just looks awkward. That was intentional—I wanted to visually represent that feeling of losing your identity when you’re infatuated (or even just in lust) with someone who doesn’t love you back.
We also included a subtle but meaningful detail at the end of the video. When I’m in the room and the door closes, there’s a shadow of a man—he was always there in my mind, always lingering, but never really present. Eventually, he fades away, which we thought was a cool, hidden touch. It’s something most people might not even notice, but for us, it added another layer to the story.
