On Thursday, September 5, the trailer for Child Star, the documentary that marks Lovato’s directorial debut, was unveiled.
The teaser includes clips of Lovato, Drew Barrymore, JoJo Siwa, Kenan Thompson, Raven-Symoné, Christina Ricci, and Alyson Stoner, both past and present, as they reflect on their experiences growing up in the spotlight.
“Everyone wanted to break into the industry at a young age,” said Lovato, 32, in the trailer.
In the preview, the featured stars discuss their struggles with substance abuse, financial difficulties, and dating their co-stars. They also reflect on the challenges facing today’s generation of young performers who seek fame through social media.
“It’s frightening to hear that these kids are earning tens of millions of dollars. Protections need to be established,” said the “Cool for the Summer” singer in the teaser.
In a recent cover story interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lovato discussed Child Star and revealed why they would keep their future daughter out of the entertainment industry until adulthood.
When asked how they would respond if their child expressed interest in performing, Lovato said, “I’d tell them, ‘Let’s study music theory and get you ready for when you turn 18, because it’s not happening before then.’”
Lovato added, “It’s not because I don’t believe in you, or love you, or want your happiness, but because I want you to have the childhood I didn’t get to experience.”
The “Heart Attack” singer also emphasized the importance of a “backup plan,” something they wish they had pursued, admitting, “Sometimes I feel like it’s time to move on, but I’m in this strange place in my career because I still depend on music for my livelihood.”
