Ed Sheeran surprised fans in New Orleans with an impromptu performance, debuting a brand-new song.
On Saturday, March 15, at around 11 a.m. local time, the 34-year-old Grammy winner emerged from a black SUV in the city’s iconic French Quarter. Dressed in a tie-dyed shirt and blue pants, Sheeran arrived with a portable amp and microphone in hand.
He was soon joined by The Soul Rebels brass band — the same group that recently performed with Kendrick Lamar at the Super Bowl halftime show. Together, they treated an unsuspecting crowd to Sheeran’s new single, “Azizam.”
The singer informed the audience that this was his first-ever live performance of the song, as reported by Nola.com.
“We’re going to do one song here — we’re filming some content — and then we’ll head off for a parade, walking down the street while playing a few more songs. Feel free to join us!” Sheeran told the seated crowd, according to the outlet.
“I’ve got a new song coming out in a couple of weeks that no one’s heard before. This will be the first time I’ve ever played it live,” Sheeran told the crowd. “We’ll perform it once now, then we’ll walk down the street, play some familiar songs, and I’ll perform this one again,” he added.
Sheeran later posted a video of the performance on Instagram, showing him rolling his portable amp through a narrow city street as the crowd steadily grew around him.
This wasn’t Sheeran’s only surprise performance that week. Earlier, he wowed the crowd in Nashville with an unexpected pop-up at Tootsie’s bar, where he performed several of his biggest hits along with covers, including Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time.”
The singer also tried to hold a surprise street performance in Bengaluru, India, on February 9, but local authorities swiftly shut it down.
Following the incident, fan-recorded videos surfaced on social media, prompting Sheeran to address the situation on his Instagram Stories. He reassured fans that everything was “all good” and clarified what had happened.
“We had permission to busk, by the way, which is why we were playing in that exact spot. It was planned in advance; we didn’t just randomly show up,” he explained.
