Ed Sheeran Surprises New Yorkers in His Upcoming Netflix Special
Ed Sheeran is proving that in New York City, you never really know who you might bump into.
On Tuesday, October 7, Netflix unveiled first-look photos for One Shot with Ed Sheeran, a new special featuring the chart-topping artist exploring the city in a completely unique way.
The project, directed by Adolescence filmmaker Philip Barantini, was produced by Barantini, 45, Sheeran, 34, and Emmy winner Ben Winston. Filmed entirely in New York City, the special captures the city’s energy and unpredictability — all in a single continuous take.
In one of the newly released images, Sheeran is seen performing for subway passengers, guitar in hand. Another black-and-white still shows Barantini gazing toward the skyline with the Empire State Building behind him.
According to Netflix, One Shot with Ed Sheeran is described as “a groundbreaking, one-take musical experience.”
The streaming giant explains that the multi-Grammy-winning artist “invites viewers on a real-time journey through New York City, performing some of his most beloved songs in one seamless shot.” From spontaneous street performances and subway sing-alongs to heartfelt exchanges with fans, the special captures the electric spirit of the city and Sheeran’s connection to it.
Sheeran’s latest album, Play, dropped in September, continuing his streak of creative visual storytelling. In the music video for “Azizam,” one of the tracks from the album, Sheeran finds himself at a Persian wedding after battling writer’s block. As he mingles and celebrates with the guests, he eventually returns to his studio with renewed inspiration.
Speaking about director Saman Kesh on Instagram, Sheeran shared, “He wanted the video to show what it’s like for non-Persians experiencing a wedding for the first time — how intense but amazing it is. It reminded me a lot of Irish weddings I grew up with — familiar in spirit, yet so different.”
Another Play music video, for the upbeat track “A Little Bit More,” stars actor Rupert Grint. Released in August, it revisits the story from their 2011 “Lego House” collaboration, flipping the narrative as Grint’s character goes from being obsessed with Sheeran to avoiding him entirely.
“Fourteen years later, me and @rupertgrint are back together,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram. “I came up with this wild idea after writing the song, and thankfully he was game. It’s a crazy video for a fun but angry song — I think it’s going to end up being a fan favorite from Play.”
