In an interview for the cover story of Rolling Stone UK, the pop star shared that they had always aspired to be the “cool girl” after a breakup.
Halsey reflected on her past with empathy in a Rolling Stone UK cover story published on Oct. 16. The 30-year-old pop star looked back on a party she hosted a few years ago that ended with the police shutting it down due to noise complaints—and the arrangement she made to stay out of trouble.
At the time, Halsey had been swimming in her underwear, surrounded by friends when officers showed up. The police suggested she could avoid penalties if she agreed to take a photo with them. The “Ego” singer went along with it, posing in a wet bra alongside the officers. Although she found the situation amusing back then, her perspective has shifted as she’s grown older.
“It took me a couple of years to realize, ‘Wow, those cops probably still have a picture of me half-naked on their phone,'” Halsey shared with the publication. “I’m sure it gets shown around at bars. Ugh, not a fan of that.”
The singer continued, “I think about all those past versions of myself, out there on their little side quests around the world—I wish I could bring them back home so they wouldn’t have to go through all of that.”
Halsey reflected on how vulnerable it feels to know that intimate moments are out in the world. “That picture on that phone, that nude on someone’s device, that Polaroid—those little pieces of me in those private spaces, whether I consented or not, are out there for others to use however they want,” she said. “It’s a really lonely feeling, wishing I could somehow call them all back.”
Discussing the idea of asking someone to delete personal photos, she connected it to being a people pleaser and how that theme comes through in her song “Lonely Is the Muse.”
“I always wanted to be the ‘Cool Girl.’ And asking someone to delete all your nudes isn’t exactly ‘Cool Girl’ behavior, even after a breakup,” she explained. “I’m different now, but that song reflects about 15 years of that mindset.”
