Halsey Reveals ‘Confessional Concept Album’ The Great Impersonator, Believed It Might Be the ‘Final Album I’d Ever Create’

The artist’s fifth studio album is set to drop later this year.
Halsey has announced that their fifth studio album will be titled The Great Impersonator.
On Tuesday, August 27, the pop star—who uses she/they pronouns—unveiled a trailer spanning decades to introduce their upcoming “confessional concept album.”
In the teaser, Halsey admits, “I genuinely believed this album would be the last one I ever created.”
The visual transitions to a series of scenes where the “You Should Be Sad” singer, 29, dons vintage outfits and hairstyles, reflecting on who they might have been if their career had taken place in different eras.
“What if I had debuted in the early 2000s? The ’90s? The ’80s? The ’70s?” the “Colors” artist ponders in a voiceover. “Am I still Halsey in each timeline? Do I still get sick? Do I still become a mom?”
In the video, Halsey embodies artists from various decades, including David Bowie and Britney Spears—the latter of whom they referenced in their recent single “Lucky.”
The trailer also includes snippets of unreleased tracks from the three-time Grammy nominee, each reflecting the musical style of different decades.
“If everything ended right now, is this the person you’d be proud to leave behind? Is it even you?” Halsey questions.
The teaser concludes with the caption: “‘The Great Impersonator’ A Confessional Concept Album by Halsey.”
Leading up to the announcement of The Great Impersonator, the singer/songwriter has released three singles: “The End,” the previously mentioned “Lucky,” and most recently, “Lonely Is the Muse.”
In June, just a day after dropping “The End,” Halsey took to Instagram to update fans on their health, revealing they’ve been dealing with significant issues.
“Thank you all for the overwhelming love for ‘The End’ and the support you’ve given me since its release,” she wrote. “I know everyone is catching up on news I’ve kept private for a long time, and I wasn’t sure how much I wanted to disclose. Your kindness means a lot, so I want to share a bit more.”
She continued: “In 2022, I was first diagnosed with Lupus SLE and later with a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. Both are currently being managed or are in remission; however, they are conditions I will likely live with for the rest of my life.”
Last month, Halsey expressed her reservations about returning to the public eye.
In a recent Tumblr post, the MaXXXine star opened up about fans who have responded negatively to their return to music, admitting it has made them “regret coming back.”
“My own fans are by far the meanest people to me compared to anyone else. Not speaking for all of you, of course,” Halsey wrote. “What used to be a small minority being awful has grown into what feels like a majority who only stick around to occasionally share how much they hate me or how terrible they think I am.”
They went on to explain that it’s challenging “to want to engage in a space that is completely devoid of kindness, empathy, patience, or, to be honest, basic human decency. Especially after years of avoiding interactions out of fear that this EXACT thing would happen.”
“I don’t know, man. I almost lost my life,” Halsey added, referencing their diagnoses of systemic lupus erythematosus and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder.
