Hilary Duff Engages in a Thoughtful Dialogue with Her Younger Self on “Mature,” Her First New Single in a Decade

Hilary Duff has officially made her return to music after a decade!
On Thursday, Nov. 6, the actress and singer unveiled her brand-new single, “Mature,” which was co-written and produced by her husband, Matthew Koma. Accompanied by a music video, the release marks Duff’s first original track since her 2015 album Breathe In. Breathe Out.
Also co-written with Madison Love, the song takes Duff, 38, back to her signature pop-rock sound as she reflects on her past through introspective lyrics: “She looks like all of your girls but blonder / A little like me just younger / Bet she loves when she hears you say / You’re so mature for your age, babe.”
Hilary Duff is stepping back into the spotlight with her first original song in a decade — and it’s a heartfelt reflection on her past and present selves.
In a statement, Duff explained, “‘Mature’ is a little conversation that my present self is having with my younger self. The two of us are looking back on a past experience and sending love to each other. It’s a chuckle, a wink, and a moment of gratitude for how far we’ve come and how sure-footed we are now.”
The song’s music video visually mirrors that idea, featuring two versions of Duff: one performing on an empty theater stage in a sparkling dress and fur coat, and another sitting in the audience wearing a leather jacket.
Speaking with Jake Shane on Therapuss, the How I Met Your Father star described the concept as “meeting yourself where you landed.” She also pointed out a meaningful moment at the end of the video that pays homage to her 2003 debut album Metamorphosis. “There are butterflies — a recurring symbol throughout my life since Metamorphosis — and there’s a little sweet butterfly moment in the video, which I really love,” Duff shared.
Reflecting further, she added, “At this point in my life, it feels really good to send love back to your past self — to acknowledge everything it took to get to where you are now. I like those little nods and gifts you can send back to yourself, like, ‘Hey, we made it.’”
Duff first announced Mature on Instagram on Monday, Nov. 3, writing, “So happy this is finally yours to hear. Been keeping this one quiet too long. My new single Mature is out Nov. 6. 🍸🪩🍒,” alongside the kaleidoscopic single artwork.
Back in September, Duff revealed that she had signed with Atlantic Records and teased a forthcoming docuseries. According to a press release, the project — directed and executive produced by Sam Wrench — will chronicle her long-awaited return to music and give fans an inside look at her personal journey.
The docuseries promises to capture her “ups, downs, and everything in between,” following Duff as she juggles family life, studio sessions, live show rehearsals, and preparing to perform on stage for the first time in over ten years. It will include exclusive interviews, performances, and footage from her personal archives.
At the time, the “Come Clean” singer teased her new creative chapter on Instagram, posting a carousel of photos — including one of her in a casual white tee and jeans, another showing lyrics on her phone beside a pair of headphones, and a studio shot of her hugging her husband and collaborator, Matthew Koma, as he played the keyboard — with the caption, “new music … or something 🪩✨🍒.”
