Fresh music from Hilary Duff has arrived.
The 38-year-old singer and actress dropped her provocative new track, “Roommates,” on Friday, Jan. 16, along with its accompanying music video. The song serves as the latest preview of her forthcoming album, luck… or something.
In “Roommates,” Duff reflects on missing the thrill and intimacy of a relationship that has settled into routine. The lyrics focus on craving the early, more passionate moments of love that feel distant now, touching on themes of desire, frustration, and emotional disconnect as time passes.
Later in the song, she references the shift from being lovers to feeling more like cohabitants, highlighting the loneliness that can surface when affection fades and partners drift apart.
Discussing the track, Duff described it as a reflection of real life getting overwhelming. She explained that the song captures a yearning for a more spontaneous and liberated chapter—before responsibilities like school drop-offs, finances, errands, and creeping insecurities began to dominate daily life. According to Duff, it’s about searching for a way back to balance, connection, and self-identity.
The music video, directed by Matty Peacock, shows Duff singing at home while a male love interest sits nearby, underscoring the emotional distance between them. Halfway through the video, rain begins to fall inside the house, a visual nod to her 2003 hit “Come Clean,” which famously featured a stormy setting.
Near the end, the house literally opens up as a wall collapses, revealing a lush outdoor landscape that Duff steps into, symbolizing release and renewal.
Duff later addressed the “Come Clean” callback during an interview with Entertainment Tonight, noting that she enjoys subtle references to her past work. She explained that after such a long career, it’s natural to revisit familiar themes, and while the two songs are very different, revisiting the rain imagery felt fitting.
Her husband, Matthew Koma—who co-wrote “Roommates” with Duff and Brian Phillips—praised her performance on Instagram, jokingly drawing attention to a rain-soaked moment from the video.
Duff’s upcoming album, luck… or something, arrives on Feb. 20 and also includes her earlier release, “Mature.”
In support of the album, she will perform in London, Toronto, New York City, and Los Angeles as part of her Small Rooms, Big Nerves Tour, in addition to residency shows at Voltaire at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas in February and May.
