Katy Perry Has a Message for Her Critics
At 40, singer Katy Perry is facing backlash surrounding her recent Blue Origin spaceflight and her Lifetimes Tour. In response to the social media criticism, Perry addressed the negativity with a heartfelt message on Instagram.
“When the online world tries to turn me into a piñata, I respond with grace and love,” she commented on April 29 beneath a post celebrating her in New York City’s Times Square. “I recognize that many are dealing with pain in different ways, and the internet often becomes a place for unresolved emotions and chaos.”
The Instagram post included a video showing a large digital billboard in Times Square that honored Perry’s tour launch. The message read, “We are so proud of you and your magical journey. And we love you to the moon and back!” and was signed, “From your worldwide cats,” a reference to her devoted fanbase, the Katy Cats.
Perry began her message by expressing appreciation for her fans: “Thank you so much for your love and support. We’re on this amazing journey together. Because of our connection, I’m able to stay true to who I am and speak from the heart. I’ve grown alongside you all, and I’m thrilled to see you across the globe this year!”
“Just so you all know, I’m doing well,” Perry continued. “I’ve spent a lot of time understanding who I am, what truly matters, and what’s real in my life. A therapist once told me something that completely shifted my perspective: ‘No one can convince you of something about yourself unless, deep down, you already believe it.’ When I do feel affected, it’s a sign to explore the emotion beneath the surface.”
She then turned her focus back to her fans: “What feels real to me is seeing your faces in the crowd, hearing you sing along, reading your heartfelt messages, and feeling the love you give. When I lock eyes with someone during a performance and we share that moment, I truly believe we’re helping each other heal, even if just a little.”
As a mother, Perry acknowledged that she’s far from flawless — in fact, she shared that she’s removed the word “perfect” from her vocabulary.
“I’m just a person navigating life in front of a massive audience,” she said. “There are times I stumble, but I always find the strength to rise again and keep moving forward. And somehow, through all the bumps and bruises, I continue seeking the light — and each time I do, a new chapter opens up. ♥️”
