Clarkson recounted the story on her self-titled talk show during a visit from guests Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren.
Kelly Clarkson didn’t hold back during the April 11 episode of her talk show.
While chatting with Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren about their Broadway production The Last Five Years, the “Breakaway” singer opened up about a memorable wardrobe mishap of her own after hearing Jonas had experienced a similar incident.
Wasting no time, Clarkson, 42, turned to Jonas, 32, and said, “I heard something happened to your pants during rehearsal,” before admitting, “I think I’ve had a similar experience. Did yours rip or something?”
Jonas confirmed the mishap, saying the wardrobe malfunction happened during rehearsal and ended up being the day they saw their “biggest jump in ticket sales.” He explained he had posted about it on Instagram in March, describing how he leapt onto a platform in front of the whole crew—and that’s when his pants split.
Jonas admitted he wasn’t exactly familiar with how stretchy his pants were during rehearsal — he just gave it his all. “Hey, if it helps sell tickets, I’m not complaining,” he joked.
Clarkson then jumped in with a personal story of her own wardrobe mishap.
“Something similar happened to me while I was on tour,” she said. “The clasp on my skirt gave out and it just dropped. I hit the ground in a flash.”
She added with a laugh, “To make matters worse, I wasn’t wearing anything underneath. It was a long skirt, and suddenly it was like—well, there it goes.”
Her guest, Warren, 37, looked stunned by the story. Clarkson went on, “Of course, it had to be the one night I skipped the essentials. I immediately dropped down, scooped it up, and someone had to rush onstage to help—all while the show was still going.”
“It was just one of those nights,” Clarkson said, reflecting on the chaotic experience. Along with the wardrobe mishap, she revealed she had also stepped on glass—but powered through the performance regardless. “Sometimes everything hits at once,” she said. “But you’ve got to just keep going.” She wrapped up the story by offering a light-hearted apology to Jonas for his own ripped pants incident.
Clarkson has always been open about the realities of fame. During a March 27 episode of Kylie Kelce’s Not Gonna Lie podcast, she talked about the less-than-glamorous truth behind her American Idol win in 2002.
“People thought I instantly became a millionaire,” she said. “But that wasn’t the case. They called it a ‘million-dollar contract,’ but I didn’t actually get a million. They said I’d get a car—I didn’t get that either. None of that stuff actually happened.”
