Lil Nas X has checked into a residential treatment program following his late-August arrest and subsequent release from jail.
The 26-year-old Grammy winner did not appear at his pre-trial hearing in Los Angeles on Monday, Sept. 15. His attorneys explained to the court that he is currently receiving care at an out-of-state facility, according to Rolling Stone and Billboard.
Judge Shellie Samuels of the Los Angeles County Superior Court allowed him to remain in the program, noting that his release conditions would be revisited if his treatment status changed. “If he transitions to outpatient care, we’ll readdress the terms,” the judge said, per reports.
After the hearing, his lawyer Drew Findling emphasized that the priority is the artist’s health and stability. “We’re doing what’s best for him personally and professionally, but most importantly for his well-being,” Findling told Rolling Stone. He added that Lil Nas X has strong support from his family and team, calling the incident “a bump” he will overcome.
The next court date is scheduled for Nov. 18. Representatives for the rapper have not commented publicly.
Prosecutors stated that he could face up to five years in prison if convicted of the charges.
The musician, born Montero Hill, was arrested on Aug. 21 after police received reports of him allegedly walking nude in Los Angeles around 6 a.m. Officers claim he resisted arrest and injured three policemen, while also attempting to prevent a fourth officer from carrying out their duties, according to court filings obtained by PEOPLE.
On Aug. 25, Hill appeared before a judge, entered a not-guilty plea to three felony counts of battery on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer, and waived formal arraignment. Bail was set at $75,000 with the added requirement of attending four Narcotics Anonymous meetings per week. He was released the same day.
Reports circulated that the rapper had suffered a drug overdose, though his father, Robert Stafford, firmly denied that claim. Speaking to the press, Stafford said his son felt deep regret over the situation, urging the public to offer compassion. “He’s going to get the help he needs. Keep him in your prayers,” he said.
Attorney Christy O’Connor also rejected allegations of drug involvement, calling the case an isolated and uncharacteristic event for the performer.
Shortly after leaving jail, Lil Nas X shared reassurance with fans on Instagram Stories, describing the experience as frightening but expressing optimism about moving forward.
