Miley Cyrus suffered a serious injury while working on Something Beautiful, a project that includes both a film and an album releasing on May 30. The Grammy-winning artist, now 32, explained that the movie was inspired by the songs on the album. For the segment tied to the track “Walk of Fame,” Cyrus aimed to shoot on the actual Hollywood Walk of Fame.
However, during her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thursday, May 22, she shared that her team couldn’t afford to officially rent the location.
To get around this, she chose to film the scene at night when the area was deserted. Unfortunately, the decision led to a severe infection, ultimately causing her knee to begin “disintegrating,” which landed her in the ICU—and left a doctor visibly repulsed.
Miley Cyrus revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live that a serious injury she sustained while filming her upcoming project Something Beautiful landed her in the ICU. The film, set to be released alongside her new album on May 30, was inspired by the tracks on the record. For a segment tied to the song “Walk of Fame,” she was determined to shoot footage on the actual Hollywood Walk of Fame.
However, due to budget limitations, her team wasn’t able to secure the location officially. To work around that, she chose to film at night when the area was empty. Unfortunately, this decision had unexpected consequences. Cyrus explained that the shoot happened in October, but by Thanksgiving in November, she found herself hospitalized with a serious infection in her knee.
“I picked something up,” she told Kimmel, who jokingly noted that she was lucky not to have been jabbed by a stray needle. Cyrus ended up briefly in the intensive care unit, only because the emergency room was packed with patients during the holiday.
When asked what exactly happened, she described how her kneecap area began to deteriorate due to the infection. A doctor asked her what might have caused such a severe condition. “I had to come clean,” she said, mimicking how she had rolled around on the pavement during filming.
The medical staff’s reaction surprised her. “The surgeon looked at me and said, ‘Yuck,’” Cyrus recalled. “These people dissect cadavers and perform brain surgery—and they were disgusted by me.”
Though she eventually recovered, the experience left a lasting impression. “Have you ever been to the Walk of Fame at night?” she asked. “I really thought I might die there.”
Reflecting on the ordeal, she admitted some regret, saying she had hoped to create something beautiful, but now had a “filthy” story instead. Kimmel joked that she nearly gave her life for the project. “I did—so they better watch it,” she replied with a laugh.
While discussing the film’s budget, Cyrus initially joked about having “a big dream and a small budget,” then clarified that most of the money went into her wardrobe.
She also noted that the film isn’t a traditional narrative movie. “The music tells the story,” she explained. “Every song carries its own meaning.” While the visual style leans into her signature bold and surreal aesthetic, at its core, it remains focused on the emotional storytelling through music.
“There was no need for a fictional character—because I’m the character,” she said, emphasizing her desire to stay true to herself in the project. “I never want to pretend to be something I’m not.”
In fact, she added with a chuckle, “My movie basically has no plot. Just a heads-up.”
She concluded by sharing what she values most about music: its openness to personal interpretation. “A song about my mom might resonate with someone else about their friend or partner. That’s what this film is about—letting people project their own meaning onto it. And I’m really proud of that.”
