Fans who were disappointed when Noah Kahan’s Saturday night concert was called off just before showtime received a sincere apology from the singer during his performance at Citi Field the following evening.
Severe weather first prompted organizers to delay the July 18 concert at the New York Mets’ stadium in Queens. Show times were pushed back, and opening acts were removed from the schedule in hopes that the event could still proceed. However, as thunderstorms and lightning intensified, officials ultimately canceled the performance to prioritize the safety of concertgoers, crew members, and performers. Kahan’s official social media accounts emphasized that protecting everyone’s safety remained the top concern.
When Kahan returned to the Citi Field stage the next night, he took time to personally address fans about the cancellation.
The 29-year-old singer explained that, despite spending nearly a decade on tour and performing hundreds of concerts, he has only had to cancel a handful of shows, and only when there was no other option. He acknowledged the frustration of fans who had traveled and waited in poor weather, expressing deep regret for what had happened.
Kahan said he had been thinking about those who spent hours in the rain and apologized sincerely, adding that he would have performed under almost any circumstances if it had been safe to do so.
He also responded to criticism from fans who wished the canceled show had been rescheduled instead. Kahan stressed that his team explored every possible solution, including unconventional scheduling options, but none proved feasible because of the logistical limitations of stadium bookings and tour commitments. He admitted feeling terrible about the outcome and told fans they deserved a better experience.
Although he sympathized with everyone who missed the performance, Kahan made it clear that he was not seeking sympathy for himself.
The mood later shifted when beloved Sesame Street characters Elmo and Cookie Monster appeared on the venue’s video screens as surprise guests. Cookie Monster jokingly asked whether Kahan had performed “Cookie Season,” prompting Elmo to remind him that the song’s title is “Stick Season.”
The pair also shared words of encouragement, praising Kahan and wishing him a successful concert. Elmo added that they were proud of him and hoped he felt proud of himself as well.
To close the memorable moment, Kahan welcomed opening act Gigi Perez back to the stage, where the two performed a duet of “She Calls Me Back.”
