Olivia Rodrigo clarified that her upcoming track “The Cure” is not inspired by the English rock band The Cure, despite being a longtime fan of their music. Speaking on the Elvis Duran Show on Thursday, May 21, the singer explained that the title similarity was simply “a happy coincidence,” even though she deeply admires the group.
Rodrigo shared that she feels especially proud of the song, describing it as a reflection of emotional growth and a perspective she was unable to express in her earlier albums. She previously mentioned that “The Cure,” set for release on Friday, May 22, is among her favorite songs she has ever written.
Although the band did not directly influence the single, Rodrigo revealed that she has formed a close friendship with the group’s frontman, Robert Smith. She joked that they speak “every week” and praised him as “amazing.”
Their friendship became public in June 2025 when Smith joined Rodrigo onstage during her Glastonbury Festival performance, where they performed “Just Like Heaven” and “Friday I’m in Love” together.
In an interview with British Vogue earlier this year, Smith spoke warmly about Rodrigo, revealing that he bought both of her albums, Sour and Guts, on CD. He praised the quality of her songwriting and shared that the two often discuss fashion and have spent memorable nights working in the studio together.
“The Cure” follows the release of “Drop Dead,” and both tracks will appear on Rodrigo’s upcoming album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, arriving June 12. During a recent appearance on On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Rodrigo said the project was heavily inspired by personal growth and her experience of falling in love for the first time.
