Sabrina Carpenter has once again taken to social media to defend herself—this time in response to accusations tied to her 2024 photo shoot with W Magazine. A TikTok user alleged that the singer intentionally echoed imagery from the 1997 film adaptation of Lolita.
The claims originated from a TikTok video by @arcafan999, which featured a screenshot from @thepopfaction comparing a scene from Lolita to one of Carpenter’s editorial shots. In the photo, Carpenter is seated barefoot on grass, wearing a pale yellow Chloé dress and being soaked by sprinklers, causing the fabric to cling to her body. The visual drew comparisons to a scene from Lolita where the character Dolores “Lolita” Haze experiences a similar moment while reading on the lawn.
Lolita, based on Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel, has been repeatedly criticized due to its plot centering on a man’s obsession with a 12-year-old girl. The novel was turned into films in both 1962 and 1997.
@thepopfaction’s side-by-side post of Carpenter and Lolita was featured in the TikTok video with the caption, “me after seeing sabrina’s lolita photoshoot.” The creator reacted with shock, saying, “What the… I’m sorry for my language, but what the F is this?”
Carpenter responded directly in the video’s comments, stating: “I’ve never seen this movie. It’s never been on my mood board and never would be.”
The TikToker referenced one of Carpenter’s own lyrics in response—specifically a line from her “Nonsense” outro during a Mexico stop on The Eras Tour, where she sang, “I’m full grown but I look like a niña/ Come put something big in my casita.”
Despite denying any connection to Lolita, Carpenter previously told Variety in 2024 that she exercised full creative control over her Short n’ Sweet album, calling it a follow-up to her first “grown-up” record.
“This is my second ‘big girl’ album—it’s a companion, but not the same,” she explained. “Having full creative control and being a full-fledged adult makes it feel like a proper sophomore album.”
The controversy over her W Magazine shoot follows other provocative moments in Carpenter’s career, including a nude shoot for Rolling Stone and the album cover for Man’s Best Friend, where she appears on all fours with a man pulling her hair.
When an X user questioned whether she had “a personality outside of sex” in response to that cover, Carpenter reposted it with a tongue-in-cheek reply: “girl yes and it is goooooood.”
