Sabrina Carpenter Embraces Her ‘Showgirl’ Era Alongside Taylor Swift
Sabrina Carpenter is stepping into the spotlight with Taylor Swift in true showgirl fashion.
The “Espresso” singer gave fans a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of her new duet with Swift — the title track of Swift’s latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, released on Oct. 3.
Carpenter, 26, celebrated the collaboration on her Instagram Stories by resharing Swift’s post announcing the album and adding a sweet throwback photo of the two hugging at the 2025 Grammy Awards, with their new song playing in the background.
The pair’s collaboration serves as the album’s closing track and offers a candid reflection on the ups and downs of fame and the demanding world of show business.
In the chorus, the two sing:
“Hey, thanks for the lovely bouquet / You’re sweeter than a peach / But you don’t know the life of a showgirl, babe / And you’re never, ever gonna.”
The lyrics continue:
“Wait, the more you play, the more that you pay / You’re softer than a kitten, so / You don’t know the life of a showgirl, babe / And you’re never gonna wanna.”
Swift delivers the bridge with lines that speak to experience and resilience:
“I took her pearls of wisdom / Hung them from my neck / I paid my dues with every bruise / I knew what to expect.”
Carpenter follows with an emotional verse of her own:
“Do you wanna take a skate on the ice inside my veins? / They ripped me off like false lashes / And then threw me away.”
Speaking to Elvis Duran on Z100, Swift explained why Carpenter was the perfect choice for the duet.
“I wanted Sabrina to be the one to sing it with me because she’s so intelligent and perfectly built for this career — if you can even call it that,” Swift said. “It’s really more of a life path. She’s incredibly strong but also deeply sensitive as an artist. I knew she’d be ideal for that song, especially since it’s the album’s closer and wraps up the story beautifully.”
Before the album collaboration, Carpenter had joined Swift on several international stops of the Eras Tour, performing together in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Australia, and Singapore. The duo even performed a special mashup of “Espresso,” “Is It Over Now,” and “Please, Please, Please” during Swift’s surprise set at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Oct. 26.
When Swift first revealed the album in August, Carpenter couldn’t hide her excitement, writing on Instagram Stories, “THE LIFE OF A SHOWGIRL OCTOBER 3rd 🧡 I know someone who’s freaking out — and it’s me.”
Carpenter has long admired Swift’s artistry. In a 2020 Apple Music interview, she recalled being inspired by Swift’s approach to songwriting.
“Taylor shared how she stopped overthinking what songs to release, especially during uncertain times,” Carpenter said. “That really encouraged me to see my own music in a new light — to trust my instincts and let the songs reflect exactly how I feel right now.”
Swift marked the midnight release of The Life of a Showgirl with a series of glamorous photos inspired by the album’s theme.
“Tonight all these lives converge here — mosaics of laughter and cocktails of tears,” she wrote on Instagram. “Where fraternal souls sing identical things, and it’s beautiful, rapturous, and a little frightening.”
