Sabrina Carpenter has a knack for humor!
In the latest episode of Hot Ones on Thursday, July 11, Carpenter discussed her approach to writing memorable lyrics, specifically referring to her popular song “Espresso.”
“I do like to pay attention to… if people can understand lyrics,” Carpenter, 25, shared with host Sean Evans.
She continued, “So much of what I like is the punchline. If people don’t get the punchline, it feels wasted. That’s how I feel about ‘me espresso.’ I’ve heard a lot of people say, ‘She should’ve said, “That’s that blonde espresso, duh.”‘”
The “Please, Please, Please” singer wrapped up her thoughts by saying, “And I’m like, ‘Well, yes. That could be another song that deserves its place, but for me, ‘me espresso’ just felt right, and it rhymes with the previous line.”
In another part of the interview, Carpenter talked about learning to trust her instincts through her song “Nonsense,” which she performs live with an improvised outro, and how it almost didn’t make it onto her album emails i can’t send.
“The lesson I learned with ‘Nonsense’ was that this song resonated with my personality, and I started to overthink what fits a record versus what fits me as an artist,” she explained. “That taught me a lot for the future. In the next record, it’s all about what feels the most honest and connects with me because I believe it will connect with others too.”
“My mom has been asking, ‘Do you feel crazy right now?’” Carpenter shared about the track. “I just love that people get my sense of humor.”
On May 18, the singer-songwriter made her musical guest debut on Saturday Night Live, performing the hit track during her first performance, along with “Nonsense” and “Feather.”
Carpenter is now preparing to release her upcoming studio album Short n’ Sweet on Friday, Aug. 23.
“MY NEW ALBUM IS COMING OUT AUGUST 23rd!!!!💋,” Carpenter announced on social media. “This project is quite special to me and I hope it’ll be something special to you too.”
One month later, Carpenter will begin her Short ‘n’ Sweet headlining tour across North America.
