Sabrina Carpenter Stuns TikTok with a Powerful ‘Defying Gravity’ Performance, Impressing Herself with the High Notes

Sabrina Carpenter is clearly a fan of both Glinda and Elphaba.
In a TikTok video shared on Nov. 29 by user palomaidaliasandoval, a friend of the Espresso singer, the Girl Meets World star showcased her impressive take on the “Defying Gravity” battle cry from Wicked.
The video shows several others attempting the song’s powerful final notes, which appear in the closing scene of the first part of the Wicked film adaptation.
At one point, the camera shifts to Carpenter, 25, sitting by a pool in a black cardigan and pants. She confidently belts out the challenging high notes and seems genuinely surprised by her own performance.
Fans were blown away by the Please Please Please singer’s performance. “Not Sabrina devoured so hard she shocked herself 😭😭,” one fan commented. Another added, “I thought, wow, that girl can actually do it — then realized it was the Sabrina Carpenter.”
One user joked, “The 4th person should be a singer fr,” while another noted Carpenter was “channeling her inner Christina [Aguilera].” Aguilera herself made a surprise appearance during Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet tour stop in Los Angeles in November, where the two performed “What a Girl Wants” and “Ain’t No Other Man” together.
“Defying Gravity” marks the finale of Wicked’s first film installment and also closes the first act of the Broadway production. Hitting the song’s demanding high notes is a significant challenge.
Cynthia Erivo, who portrays Elphaba in the film, tackled the number while performing stunts in a harness, undergoing “rigorous training” to master the scene. Speaking at a post-screening discussion at the DGA Theatre in New York, Erivo explained, “I had an incredible vocal coach who helped me find the breath I needed. Usually, you need the ground to push off of for that kind of power. Without it, I had to use the air — and my ‘non-existent’ diaphragm since I was in a corset.”
Despite the challenges, Erivo, 37, was committed to delivering an authentic performance of the iconic song.
“I endured whatever bruises, chafing, and discomfort were needed,” she shared. “I wanted to truly feel the experience of flying and singing that song simultaneously. I hope it was worth it.”
