Lil Nas X Won’t Release a Song with Taylor Swift Unless It’s Perfect!
The two-time Grammy winner, 25, recently spoke with E! News at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on March 27, where he opened up about nearly collaborating with Taylor Swift, 35.
“We were working on something,” Lil Nas X shared. “She gave me the opportunity to try a verse on a song, but I couldn’t quite find the right vibe, so it didn’t end up happening.”
While the Industry Baby artist didn’t want to dwell on what might have been, he had nothing but praise for Swift. “I’m proud of my girl,” he said.
“I love the album. She’s been absolutely killing it. She’s at the very top, and I’m grateful she even thought of me.”
When asked about the possibility of a future collaboration between the Old Town Road and All Too Well artists, Lil Nas X teased, “When it happens… Global. World. Tay-Tay and Nassy.”
Though he’s been reserved about the near-miss collaboration, Lil Nas X hasn’t been shy about showing his admiration for Swift online. According to fan accounts, he even shared a photo of a Midnights-themed calendar on his Instagram Stories last November.
At the GLAAD Media Awards on Thursday, the “Holiday” singer spoke with PEOPLE about his personal plans and the new chapter of his career following the release of his March EP, Days Before Dreamboy.
“This era is all about embracing my true self more than ever,” Lil Nas X shared. “I want to feel completely free, only engaging in what genuinely excites me. If something doesn’t align with that, I simply won’t do it.”
He continued, “If I don’t want to be somewhere, I won’t be there. Now more than ever, it’s essential to stand firm in who I am, recognize my power, and be intentional about where I invest my energy.”
In his conversation with PEOPLE, Lil Nas X reflected on once feeling the need for universal approval—something he has since learned to let go of. “I used to feel like everyone had to like me,” he admitted. “Even as I tried to move past that, part of me still held on. But now, I’m just showing up as myself. I’m simply existing.”
His latest project comes nearly four years after his 2021 debut album, Montero. During his time away, he explained that he needed to experience a more ordinary life. Between his album and the new EP, he released several singles—some of which are featured on Days Before Dreamboy—and collaborated with Camila Cabello on last year’s track, “He Knows.”
“I was thrown into adulthood surrounded by intense fame,” he shared. “So it felt refreshing to just be out in the world—walking around, meeting people, dining at restaurants, even spending time alone in solitude.”
